Letter: ‘The bad & the ugly might be happening in North Grafton’
I’ve lived in Grafton for over 50 years. It seems like things are always changing, which can be “the good, the bad & the ugly.”
And it looks like the bad & the ugly might be happening in North Grafton on 122. The proposed project 244 Worcester Street — Churchill & Banks Companies, LLC – Warehouse Facility is a big Question mark.
Worcester Street is one of the gateways to the town of Grafton, giving people coming into the town a sense of what the town is about. And of course, it’s right off the Mass Pike, with lots of traffic heading this way. Think about how people will perceive the town with a humongous warehouse as the first sight they see coming to town all along Worcester Street. I’m guessing it’s not a pleasant view to the town’s entrance. Think about your own house and how you want your guess to feel entering your home and what your house says about you.
We can always use the excuse that Wyman & Gordon is already there and what’s another building, however, it is set back and non-intrusive (and always been there). The question is do we want this on our front lawn. I thought we had an Industrial Park in the town for these types of businesses. Oh, and I forgot to mention the truck traffic which will not only be going and coming to/from the Mass Pike, but it will also be snaking its way through Bridge St and little center of North Grafton (heading out and in from) to Rt 20 and 290. And the noise of the ever so pleasant Jake-Break coming down the hill on Rt 140 on the way to the warehouse.
We’ve spent Millions on the Schools, Library, Public works building, Police & Fire Department in the town to make it look nice, be appealing and functional. Where are we heading now? Ah! of course it is about the money! More revenue for the town. I think the Town leaders should start thinking about what the town represents and where are we moving to as a town. And is it what all the towns’ people want or is it just a select few. Just my point of view about MY town.
Sincerely, George Gilligan North Grafton
