Letter: ’25 Worcester St. has been underutilized for decades’

Dear Members of the Affordable Housing Trust,

Thank you for the work you are doing on the proposed development of 25 Worcester Street for affordable senior housing.

I don’t know how many people appreciate what a truly unique and exciting opportunity this is.  It felt really good to vote along with so many others in favor of officially deeding this property to the AHT and earmarking it for much needed senior housing.  Walkability to amenities is a hugely desirable quality for affordable housing developments, and it is a shame that there has been such a strong desire expressed by some members of the public to relegate developments like this one to the outskirts of town.

The property at 25 Worcester Street has been underutilized for decades.  It doesn’t bring in any revenue, and in its current state it really only adds value to a handful of residents.  On the flip side, developing the property has the opportunity to bring in additional tax revenue, bring in additional customers to all of the businesses in and around the historic center, AND make a dent in our affordable housing shortfall.

Yes, please. This is what so many of us voted for.  This benefits all of us.

My understanding in watching the replay of your most recent meeting is that much of the ongoing discussion will be in determining the desired style and number of units, and that traffic/safety issues would also be addressed through the planning process.  (There is really no issue in that location that cannot be overcome with sufficient motivation.)  In watching that discussion, I was pleased to see that the AHT is committed to promoting a meaningful increase to our housing inventory while still being mindful of safety, green space, and aesthetic

It is such a bright spot to see this project start to take shape.  Thank you again for your commitment to the project, and I look forward to following (and supporting) your progress.

Sincerely,

Chantelle Kimball
