Wyman-Gordon land will be developed for new warehouse

A 375,000 square foot warehouse is in the planning stages for the front lawn of Wyman-Gordon, which is selling off 26.2 acres of its Worcester Street property and relocating its entrance in the process.

The application submitted by Providence-based Churchill and Banks Companies, LLC, does not indicate the eventual end use of the warehouse, which Town Planner Christopher McGoldrick said is not uncommon in the initial stages.

“There are a lot of companies that would probably take advantage of a spot so close to I-90,” McGoldrick said.

The fenced-in parcel at 244 Worcester Street has frequently been used for youth soccer games and is often seen covered in Canadian geese (and their natural byproducts). It would keep the existing entrance across from Brigham Hill Road, while Wyman-Gordon’s parking will be consolidated, according to the site application materials.

The parcel, as well as Wyman-Gordon, is zoned industrial. Across Worcester Street are residential neighborhoods.

Proposed use includes:

  • Warehousing and industrial shipping distribution;
  • 24 hour/day, 7 day/week operation with light shifts on Saturday and Sunday;
  • An estimated 300 employees, with 180 employees estimated on the largest shift;
  • Delivery vehicles will be primarily tractor-trailers, generating approximately 638 new vehicle trips per day;
  • Hazardous materials on-site will include petroleum products, fertilizers, and paints/solvents.
  • The proposal will come before the Planning Board on September 27 and the Zoning Board on September 30.
