Reporter’s Notebook: Work restarts on Grafton Common; pizza is environmentally friendly now

There was a lot of dirt being flung around on Grafton Common earlier this summer. Trees came down. Bricks were delivered.

And then…

Not a lot happened.

Fortunately, Paul Scarlett of the Grafton Historic District recently clarified what has been going on — or not as the case may be — and has good news: Grafton Common will soon be bustling with work.

The delay was due to the unavailability of granite.

With the granite now delivered, the brick walkway can now be installed.

Admit it: you’ve put the occasional pizza box in the recycling bin.

After all, it’s cardboard. There’s only so much space in the fragile Grafton trash bags and pizza boxes… well, they have sharp corners.

For those who want to eat their pizza and not feel guilty about the environment, the town has issued a ruling: go ahead and recycle!

“Recently there has been an increase in calls to the Municipal Center about whether pizza boxes can be recycled,” a statement from Town Administrator Evan Brassard reads. “We have spoken to our trash and recycling collector, and are happy to report that pizza boxes are recyclable! There can be grease in the box, all you need to do is ensure there is no food waste (crust, cheese, etc.) and you will be set to include it in your recycling for pick up.

“If you have any questions about what can or cannot be recycled, you can contact E.L Harvey directly at 800-321-3002, or online at http://www.elharvey.com.

Here’s something to choo-choo on:

The Select Board will hold a public meeting on the Grafton & Upton Railroad on September 9, 7 p.m. at the Municipal Center. The session is not to ask and answer questions, but to speak — for no more than two minutes — about the impact the railroad has had on the town.

The Environmental Protection Agency is negotiating a settlement with the short-haul rail company for alleged violations of the Clean Air Act’s chemical accident prevention requirements, which include failure to file a risk management plan before opening its propane facility and questions about fire controls. Read all about it here.

The meeting will also be held over Zoom, where public comments are welcome as well.
