GHS student-athletes collecting socks, professional attire, sports equipment

Grafton High School’s Student-Athlete Committee is sponsoring drives for new socks, professional attire and sports equipment as part of a service project.

The student-athlete group was started by new Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson, who meet with him regularly to discuss topics surrounding athletics and other topics.

“One of our tenets is service – helping others be their very best while doing everything we can to help those in need,” Anderson said.

The following drives are running through December 4:

Sock Drive — Many people are surprised to hear that socks are the least donated clothing items and yet the most in-demand for those in need. White socks, fuzzy socks, dress socks, and even pantyhose for women are acceptable. Socks MUST be new.

Professional Attire Drive — A tie your dad doesn’t wear anymore. A dress that no longer fits. A blazer you haven’t put on in months. As we get closer to the holidays, professional attire is even more important for so many people. Bring in gently used professional clothes and accessories that will be donated to area shelters for individuals who are in need.

Sports Equipment Drive — Often, kids need something to give them hope, and sports can do just that. This drive will focus on anything you are willing to part with. Old roller skates, a basketball you don’t use, a glove you grew out of. This type of equipment will go a long way.

“In addition to those drives, we are encouraging everyone to take part in random acts of kindness,” Anderson said. “Send a teacher a thank you note, hold the door open for someone behind you, compliment a friend or a stranger, introduce yourself to someone you don’t know.”

Boxes will be set up in the Commons for all three drives.
