Virus stops countdown clock as Swirls & Scoops postpones seasonal opening

Grafton’s unofficial countdown to spring has ended with a crying emoji.

Swirls & Scoops, the often-crowded seasonal ice cream stand on Worcester Street, started its traditional countdown to its April 1 opening on March 1. At the time, no one took into account the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the statewide shutdown of retail businesses.

Restaurants, of course, can offer take out. But in the end, the chance of contagion in a packed ice cream line proved to be too much.

“In light of the current situation to ensure everyone’s safety we have decided to postpone our opening,” a sign in the window reads. “Thank you for understanding. Stay safe and we hope to see you soon.”

Will Grafton residents get their Purple Cow fix this year? Hopefully the countdown will start again soon.

I was worried this would happen. When we see the sign every year we know summer is coming. I hope we can have Swirls open this year! Thank you Swirls and Scoops for all you do for our community.
