Second and third graders are welcomed back to Grafton elementary schools

Second and third graders returned full-time to North Street and Millbury Street elementary schools Monday for the first time since March 2020 closed schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While students have attended school since the fall on a hybrid model — one week in the classroom alternated with another week remotely — it was the first time meeting their classmates in person for many students.

“We had SUCH a fun day with our second and third graders!” read a post on the North Street Elementary School Facebook page. “Each classroom won at least one experience, ranging from class soccer games to karaoke dance parties and everything in between! Throughout the week, they’ll be taking their new ‘class photos’ as they get to know each other.”

In Grafton, kindergarteners and first graders returned full-time to North and South Grafton elementary schools last month . Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings was already planning to bring back older elementary school students when Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley surprised school officials across the state by mandating that elementary students return to in-person learning by April 5. Grades 4, 5, and 6 return to the two elementary schools on Monday.

Grafton Middle School students will return April 28. A date has not been set for the return of Grafton High School students.
