Reporter’s Notebook: Orange is the new ‘please don’t shoot me; I’m not a deer’
It’s October, and the cautious nature lover knows that means one very important fashion tip: wear blaze orange.
Hunting season is here, and the goal for anyone walking in the woods — including Grafton Land Trust and Grafton Conservation properties — is to NOT look like an animal worthy of being turned into wall art or jerky. That means bright colors, preferably orange — for you, your kids, and even your pets.
Deer hunting season started on October 1 and runs through December 31.
Opossum and raccoon also started on October 1 and runs through January 31, 2022.
Coyote season runs October 16 through March 8, 2022
Rabbit and hare run October 16 through February 28, 2022
Fox runs November 1 through February 28, 2022
Hunting is permitted on Grafton Conservation land from a half hour before sunrise until a half hour before sunset. Grafton Land Trust Land requires a permit, with the exception of Potter Hill Meadows, G. Knowlton Preserve, and Rita Martin Preserve.
Hunting is not permitted on Sundays.

The Grafton Public Library may not be open just yet, but there is one place you can sit and enjoy the sweet sweet public internet: the new patio.
Grab one of the red Adirondack chairs and your laptop and guest wireless access is available, no password required, 24/7. It should not need to be stated, but I’m going to say it anyway: Do not download, upload, or create porn.
Signing in to use a computer or the Library’s Wi-Fi constitutes agreement with its Internet Use Policy, and the Internet Use Policy and Procedures applies to Library computers and users on the Library’s wireless network.
Illegal activities or activities that interfere with or disrupt the network, users, services or equipment are prohibited and not protected by the Library’s privacy policy. The Library does not routinely monitor public
computers, but reserves the right to do so when a violation of this policy or illegal activity is suspected. Staff is authorized to take immediate action to protect the security of computers and the network. This includes confiscating any removable media, requiring a user to halt computer use and/or leave the premises, and contacting law enforcement authorities.

The Fire Chief Search Committee is wrapping up its interviews with candidates on Wednesday and will forward their recommendations on to the Select Board. They, in turn, will interview those candidates starting at 6 p.m. on October 12, continuing to October 14 if necessary.
Fire Chief Mickey Gauthier will be retiring at the end of the year after 49 years with the Grafton Fire Department.
