Reporter’s Notebook: Gasper is assistant superintendent; fall sports return

Kristen Gasper has been promoted to assistant superintendent for human resources and operations, Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings told the School Committee this week.

“She basically is my right hand in everything outside of curriculum and instruction,” Cummings said in praise of Gasper’s work.

Gasper was one of Cummings’ first hires after taking over as superintendent in 2011, stealing her from Shrewsbury to serve as principal at Grafton Middle School. She moved on to take over human resources in the central office a few years ago.

“The degree of her value in the Grafton public schools is truly unmeasurable,” Cummings said.

Grafton High School Principal Jim Pignataro told the School Committee that staff is trying to make sure students have as many opportunities as possible despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

While many high schools pared down its classes due to remote learning, Grafton High students still have seven classes daily, whether remote or at the school under the hybrid model.

“We wanted to make sure that courses that students signed up for remained on the books,” Pignataro said.

The high school will be partnering with Quinsigamond Community College to offer more Early College High School courses. Successful completion will provide students three college credits per course and five GHS credits with Advanced Placement credit per course.

Offerings will include Business Law, English 101 and 102, Pre-Calculus, and Principles of MacroEconomics.

Yes. In the age of Covid, acting has become… athletic? Pignataro is in talks with director Lisa Scarlett for the possibility of organizing performances outside on the football field.

The field will also be hosting Senior Night in addition to graduation at the end of the school year.
