Calloway Bolton takes reins at Apple Tree Arts
Apple Tree Arts enters the summer session on a celebratory note by officially welcoming Alaina Calloway Bolton as the organization’s second executive director, succeeding founder Donna Blanchard, who has retired after 30 years’ outstanding service to the community.
Calloway Bolton began the position during the height of the pandemic in June 2020 and was instrumental in leading ATA, the largest community school of the performing arts in Blackstone Valley, safely through the turbulence of the past year.
As executive director, Calloway Bolton intends to solidify the organization’s sustainability and adaptiveness for years to come, position Apple Tree Arts as the community’s creative hub — a place that values both artistic excellence and creative exploration, and ensure that ATA’s high-quality educational programs are accessible to and inclusive of all.
“From my own experience as both a student and teacher, I know that music and theatre education can be truly transformative not only artistically, but socially, emotionally, and intellectually,” said Calloway Bolton. “I am honored to have the opportunity to build on Donna’s legacy and work with ATA’s board, staff, faculty, and supporters to continue to grow the positive impact Apple Tree Arts has in our community.”
Calloway Bolton steps into this new role after several years as ATA music education director and voice and piano faculty member.
“Alaina’s passion for arts education’s role in youth development, background in music and theatre, plan to ensure the organization’s sustainability, and strong vision for Apple Tree Arts’ future made us confident that she was the right candidate to carry on Donna’s legacy,” said Aaron Chaisson, president of the board.
A Massachusetts native, Calloway Bolton received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in vocal performance from New England Conservatory and Longy School of Music of Bard College, respectively. She has experience as a professional vocalist, music educator, nonprofit arts administrator, and small business owner. In 2019, she was one of 26 individuals from across the country selected through a competitive application process to participate in the Community Arts Education Leadership Institute, an eight-month leadership program run by the National Guild for Community Arts Education.
An event in honor of Donna Blanchard’s retirement and in celebration of her legacy is planned for this fall.
