Letter: A question of zoning at 25 Worcester Street

I think that the conversation about 25 Worcester Street is wrongly being framed as an argument of affordable housing vs. no affordable housing.  I want to express my very strong support for affordable housing in as many places as possible in town, including 25 Worcester Street.

I am only concerned about the monstrous 20 unit apartment buildings, that the Housing Trust has proposed.  The town maintains that this lot is zoned for 8 units, not 60 units.  So, 8 affordable units could be planned for this lot in keeping with the scope and character of the historic Grafton town center, consistent with zoning rules adopted and approved by the people of Grafton.  How wonderful this would be.  As opposed to the 10 percent of 60 units the plan the Affordable Housing Trust has proposed, which would only give us six affordable housing units.

I just don’t understand why the Affordable Housing Trust doesn’t make the most of the space as is currently zoned and provide more affordable housing.  Instead, it appears they want to override the zoning and build large apartment buildings that are mostly market rate.

    Humanity. Humility. Harmony.
As Grafton residents in a world where these attributes have been challenged in the last year, I am humbly asking for your consideration.

Our town has a democratic system in place to allow for all voices to be heard and for all votes to be counted.
Affordable Housing is important. The property on 25 Worcester Street has been donated to the Affordable Housing Trust for 55+ Senior Affordable Housing.

As citizens we need to ensure the delivery of the intent of the land as well as the integrity of our community.
As an abutting neighbor to the property we are interested in maintaining the original goal of 100% Senior Housing. Our objective is to ensure an aesthetically harmonious building that supports the needs of the senior population, present company included, and adheres to the beautiful gateway of Grafton Common.

Let’s all work together to build a community for seniors that favor our town and not a developer. Let’s consider other options than the original 3 story buildings that will house only 10% of affordable units. Let’s ensure that politics do not overcome reason. Let’s practice humanity, humility and harmony.

    Thank you,
