Poll: Is it a bandstand or a gazebo?

It’s only fitting for a website called Grafton Common that our first question for readers is this: that structure in the middle of Grafton Common itself — is it a bandstand or a gazebo?

Constructed as a prop for the 1930s film “Ah, Wilderness!,” the gazebo/bandstand is the unofficial symbol of Grafton. It’s the backdrop of countless family photos, Grafton High School’s annual pre-prom meeting place, the Grafton Lions Club’s Fourth of July concert, the Grafton Farmers Market… you get the picture. We’ve all been there.

We just don’t all agree on what to call it. Is it a gazebo, as it’s referenced in the Grafton Gazebo Road Race? Or is it a bandstand, as it’s used during the Grafton summer concert series?

Grafton Common (the website) is still establishing its stylebook. Let’s take a vote:

Results will be announced next week and will establish how the site will refer that conical little building from here on out.

In the meantime, if you want to see all the Grafton scenes in “Ah, Wilderness!,” check out the video below.

Gazebo – both because of town tradition and alliteration.

It is both. A gazebo is the architecture, bandstand is the use. A gazebo in the back yard is a simple structure usually but put a band in it and it is a bandstand.
