Happy Shelia Ide Day! Grafton honors first woman selectman

You may not have realized it, but Tuesday, November 16 was officially Sheila Ide Day in the town of Grafton.

Of course, it was approved, via proclamation, around 9 p.m. that day by the Select Board, without Ide in attendance.

Ide was the first woman elected as selectman in the town of Grafton, taking office in May 1988 and serving until May 2000. She served on the town’s Economic Development Committee, notably pushing for the Grafton Commuter Rail Stop, the development of Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine on the former grounds of Grafton State Hospital, and the creation of CenTech Park on the Grafton/Shrewsbury line.

Select Board members praised Ide’s service and willingness to break down barriers to make Grafton a stronger community.

Select Board Chair Peter Carlson will be presenting Ide with the proclamation at a later date.
