Grafton High students return to school on May 3

Grafton High School students will be back in the building full time as of May 3.

Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings announced the decision Tuesday night at the School Committee, well in advance of a state mandate.

“I’m proposing we bring students in grades 9-12 back on May 3,” Cummings said. “That gives us a few days to get the middle school situated.”

While Riley surprised school officials across the state in March by mandating that elementary students return to in-person learning by April 5, Grafton has largely worked on its own to bring back students.

Kindergarten and first grade students returned to North and South Grafton elementary schools back in February, followed by Grades 2 and 3 at North Street and Millbury Street elementary schools on March 29. Grades 4, 5, and 6 were back in school on April 5.

With the return to high school on May 3, the senior class of 2021 will at least have a month when they can be with their classmates and have some celebration of their final year in school.

Cummings also noted that COVID-19 cases in the schools have been trending downward.

“Fingers crossed, we hope this trend continues,” he said.
