Grafton High Principal Pignataro announces retirement

Count Grafton High School Principal James Pignataro as among the members of the Class of 2021.

The longtime principal, affectionately known as “Mr. Pig” by 34 years worth of Grafton students, announced his retirement, effective June 30, in an email to parents Monday afternoon.

“It is time for me to focus on my family as we face some challenges as well as explore other opportunities in education,” Pignataro wrote. “I’ve been very fortunate to work with dedicated faculty and staff over these years. In my roles, as a teacher, coach, advisor, administrator, I can honestly say that I’ve truly enjoyed my time at Grafton High School. I want to thank the community of Grafton for their support of the public school system and most importantly thank the many students that I’ve worked with over the years.”

Pignataro led Grafton High through some tumultuous times, including the current COVID-19 pandemic. In 2008, an unfavorable report from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges focused on cramped conditions at the high school, highlighting the need for a new facility. The new Grafton High opened in 2012.

It was the second time Pignataro was forced to balance construction with education. During the 1995 GHS expansion, he found himself teaching history, occasionally on the auditorium stage, while the sounds of trucks and power tools competed for student attention with his lessons.

A highlight of his tenure at the school was his participation in a cultural exchange with China, when he joined a group of American educators who toured the country’s schools. He returned the favor multiple times, hosting Chinese educators who observed Grafton students.

Pignataro is known for his dedication to the GHS sports programs and serves on the board of directors for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

“Jim is one of the hardest working people I have ever known,” Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings said. “He has worked tirelessly for over three decades to help and support countless students throughout his career.  Jim is going to be greatly missed as a leader and friend to everyone.”

The School Committee will likely discuss the process of replacing Pignataro at Tuesday’s meeting.
