Carney is no longer ‘interim’ principal at Grafton High

It’s official: Kevin Carney is now the principal at Grafton High School.

You may have thought that Carney, who took over the post from Jim Pignataro back in July, already carried the title, since the “interim” was largely silent.

Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings announced Thursday that a search committee “was looking for a candidate who could provide consistency for staff and students while building on the great work GHS is doing. The hiring committee unanimously chose Kevin, and I am thrilled that Kevin accepted the position.”

Carney was hired as interim GHS assistant principal prior to the pandemic in 2020 after a two-year stint as a partner in The Education Alliance consulting firm.

Carney has 20 years of school and district leadership experience and notably served as superintendent of the Uxbridge Public Schools between 2012-2018. Previously, he was director of education at the Doctor Franklin Perkins School after working in Ashland as an assistant principal and principal for a decade.

Cummings also announced the permanent hiring of science teacher Jason Cote as assistant principal, a role he has also filled as interim since July.

“Jason is a long-time science teacher who has a great relationship with staff and students,” Cummings said. “Jason has done a wonderful job as interim, and I could not be happier to have him accept the permanent position.”
