Silver Lake Beach will be closed, in-person summer programs canceled by recreation and Grafton Library

Get ready for a summer without summer programs — or Silver Lake Beach.

The Finance Committee was informed Monday that the Recreation Department will not be offering summer camps or programming this summer, due to COVID-19 concerns.

The word came on the same day that Gov. Charlie Baker announced new guidelines for summer camps, including small recreational programs like Grafton. The regulations call for regular temperature checks and a limit on 10 children per group, with no staff allowed to “float” between groups.

Silver Lake Beach, slated to open June 20-August 22, will not open. The small beach at 245 Upton St., Grafton’s only public swimming area, tends to be crowded on hot summer days, raising the question of whether patrons will maintain social distancing during the pandemic.

More information about the decision, including refunds for programming or beach passes, will be announced Tuesday.

Additionally, the Grafton Public Library announced that no in-person summer programs will be offered, although the summer reading program, “Imagine Your Story,” will be offered online. A re-opening date for the library has not been set. A no-contact takeout/delivery service is expected to be offered in July.
