Who is that masked man on Grafton Common?
Jerome Wheelock would turn 186 on June 20, and his statue received an early birthday present recently: a mask.
Naturally, both Wheelock and his statue are not at risk for COVID-19, but it stands as a reminder that while the curve is flattening in Massachusetts, the pandemic is far from over and masks are still required in public.
Wheelock, the inventor of Wheelock steam packing, left $100,000 to build the Grafton Public Library which his statue keeps a watch on from his perch beside Grafton Common. An additional $100,000 was given to the town to erect the statue, crafted by sculptor Hebert Adams.
