Reporter’s Notebook: Summer learning, GHS students return, and did you hear about the Grafton Lion?

There are still spots available for the Summer Season of Learning, which will be offered both virtual and in-person at Grafton High School this summer.

Running July 12 — August 2, classes will be taught by Grafton Public Schools professionals and will be offered to students aged kindergarten through grade 12. Both morning and afternoon sessions are offered.

The program is designed to be self-sustaining: neither the town nor the school budget will fund the program. Rather, parents will pay a user fee of $75 per child, per program.

Check out the full program and register here.

Grafton High School students — yes, 712 of them! — return to the classroom full-time on Monday, bringing the entire system back on-line for the first time since March 2020.

Bad news for sophomores: they’re coming back to ELA MCAS on Monday and Tuesday. Sorry kids.

Did anyone have a better birthday weekend than Ifeatu Melifonwu?

The 2017 Grafton High School graduate was drafted by the Detroit Lions out of Syracuse University as the 101st overall pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft Friday night.

This, of course, is not the Melifonwu family’s first, um, round at the NFL Draft. Brother Obi (GHS 2012) was selected in the second round out of UConn in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Obi signed with the New England Patriots as a free agent in 2018 and was part of a Super Bowl-winning team that season, and was most recently a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

Happy birthday, Ifeatu!
