North Street 6th graders hope their creations will help cure cancer

A trio of 11-year-olds calling themselves “Creations 4 Cancer” are hosting a yard sale Sunday with a number of twists.

Nothing has a price. Not the lemonade. Not the crafts. Not anything else that’s on the table.

And customers will be asked to donate however much money they want to give to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, because their cause is rooted in founder Eliya Gladstone’s personal experience.

“One day during recess, I had a great idea. I remembered how I felt when my father had cancer,” Gladstone wrote on the website she and her friends created themselves. “So, I decided to help people fight through cancer so no one will have to feel like that. I got my friends, Maeve Brophy and Elise Drake and told them my idea. Both of them wanted to help out.

“We started asking everyone we knew to join. But we only ended up with just the three of us,” she added. “Even though there were only a few of us, we started right away. And boy, it was hard. What do we make? What do we sell? What should we call it? We agreed on cupcakes 4 cancer. But then I realized we decided to sell more than cupcakes. So I thought about it and came up with creations. Creations 4 Cancer.”

The North Street Elementary School sixth graders plan to raise funds via yard sales, lemonade and bake sales, and selling their artwork, jewelry and tie-dyes. Some donations are made directly through their website.

The yard sale is Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 74 Adams Road.
