Letter: Senate bill ‘is a far-reaching extreme change to law enforcement practices’

There has been much discussion related to Senate bill 2800 since it was released a few days ago. The bill is a far-reaching extreme change to law enforcement practices.

The Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association has and continues to support the creation of a Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) Program. Governor Baker has filed a bill that address just that. The Senate’s version, while including their version of POST, includes much that we as police leaders, find problematic and should receive appropriate review and discussions to fully understand the implications of the bill that is not possible in such a short time. We do not support the expedited passage of the Senate bill that now has 145 amendments attached which further complicates an appropriate review.
