Letter: Grafton Common needs taller trees
The following letter was sent to John Stephens, Community Preservation Commission chair, and Bill Nicholson, Historic District Commission chair, and also sent to Grafton Common.
Hello to Chairman Stephens and Nicholson and to all fellow commission members,
I didn’t know if you have the image below showing just how important trees were in years past on the Town Common. It’s from a postcard I recently purchased reflecting an early 20th century view of walking through the Common.
I hope your budget can see fit to replace the large trees recently removed with replacement trees of a significant caliper size and height to quickly achieve some new canopy growth.
The replacement trees that were recently planted for the Grafton Common Restoration Project are very small in height and caliper size and will therefore take decades to achieve any significant canopy growth for residents to enjoy while walking the Common.
Cordially and respectfully submitted for your additional consideration.
Bill Yeomans
Is there a PUBLIC priority list for any of the work around and on the Common? The dismal condition in front of the library for most of the summer was ridiculous.
Mr. Yeoman’s comments on the trees is spot on; yet nobody seems to care. Real shovel in the ground work seems to be all about the newly renovated and expanded library. Grafton is about more than just one building … or at least it should be.
Spend some money on bigger and better trees.
