Grafton voters favor Markey, O’Connor in November Senate race

Grafton voters came out strongly to re-elect Sen. Edward Markey, with local Republicans opting to run Kevin O’Connor against him in the November election.

While social distancing was in full display at the polls at Grafton Middle School and Millbury Street School, a good chunk of the 4,531 voters never showed up at the polls — at least not on Tuesday. According to Town Clerk Kandy Lavallee, about 300 residents opted for early voting at the Municipal Center last week, and stacks of mailed-in ballots kept poll workers busy at the precinct machines.

Overall, 3,592 pulled Democratic Party ballots while 933 opted for Republican candidates.

In the senate race, incumbent Markey came out strong, earning 1,886 votes to U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III’s 1,692. Kennedy beat Markey in Precinct 4 and tied him in Precinct 5.

On the Republican side, Kevin O’Connor was Grafton’s vote for the nomination, eking out a total of 443 to Shiva Ayyadurari’s 422. Ayyadurai had a strong showing in Precinct 1, where 104 people favored him over O’Connor, who had only 3 votes.

In the Democratic Governor’s Council race, Paul DePaulo easily won over Padraic Rafferty, 1,911 to 1,061.

U.S. Rep. James McGovern was unopposed, gaining 3,333 votes. His Republican challenger, Tracy Lovvorn, scored 817 votes.

State Sen. Michael Moore will be unopposed by a Republican in November and earned 3,103 Democratic votes.

State Rep. David Muradian is unopposed by a Democrat in November and earned 836 Republican votes.
