Grafton COVID-19 cases rise to 45 as state increases testing

There are now 45 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Grafton, according to figures released Friday by the state Department of Public Health.

Officials are working closely with the patients and will notify others who have had close contact with them.

With the state entering what is believed to be the surge in the pandemic 46,023 confirmed cases have been reported, with 2,360 deaths. In the United States, there are 865,585 cases and 48,816 total deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

While some states are in the process of relaxing quarantine measures, Gov. Charlie Baker said in a press conference Friday that he will continue to follow the data before allowing non-essential businesses to re-open.

“Our view going forward here is going to be that until we start to see some of that kind of information — the peaking of the surge and the move in the other direction for some sustained period of time — we’re not going to be interested in reopening anything,” he said.

Massachusetts now leads the country in per-capital testing. Nearly 9,000 tests have been conducted daily, with more than 180,000 tested as of this week.

On Wednesday, the state released numbers of COVID-19 cases in surrounding towns:

  • Millbury: 117
  • Northbridge: 90
  • Shrewsbury: 147
  • Sutton: 20
  • Upton: 13
  • Westborough: 133
  • Worcester: 1,457
