First case of COVID-19 in Grafton schools reported

A member of the North Grafton Elementary School community has tested positive for COVID-19, the first reported case since schools opened last month.

Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings, in an email to parents, did not say whether the infected person was a student or a member of the school staff due to HIPAA requirements.

The individual was not in school Wednesday and those who were in close contact have been notified and were dismissed from school. None will return until after a 14-day quarantine.

The news came as Grafton reported its 121st case of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, an increase of two in the past week.

The Grafton schools adopted a hybrid schedule to cope with concerns about viral spread, with cohorts of students attending in-person school one week while learning remotely the next. Masks are required, desks are spaced apart, and multiple safety protocols have been adopted.

“As always, the safety of our school community is of the utmost importance,” Cummings wrote.
