Community Harvest Project seeks socially distanced volunteers

It’s time to start picking veggies at the Community Harvest Project, and the farm is looking to add something to its fields that have been long absent: volunteers.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced CHP to do without the church groups, corporate give-backs, school children and other volunteers that the non-profit has often called its “second crop.” But with a bit of social distancing, a slimmer group of volunteers are needed to harvest produce destined for food banks and soup kitchens.

“If you have not already heard we are in full harvest mode here at Community Harvest Project with blueberries, beans, peas, collard greens, kale, summer squash, green onions and lettuce all coming out of the fields,” the group wrote in a news release. “Today, we saw the first red tomato which means the peak harvest is right around the corner and we need your help.”

Volunteers age 12 and above can be hosted for the rest of the season (16.5 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult). Groups of up to 30 can be hosted per shift. At the farm, all groups will be broken up into smaller groups of <10 people for field work. Individuals can sign up to volunteer using the Sign Up Genius link posted on Facebook each Friday for shifts the following week.

All volunteers need to sign up in advance.
