Video: Busy Grafton Fire Department recruits on-call firefighters

The Grafton Fire Department has had 251 calls since the first of the year, which puts them on a pace of 600 calls by the end of 2022.

That’s assuming that nothing unusual happens — and in the fire safety field, that’s something no one will bet on.

It’s a good time for a push for new recruits for Grafton’s on-call fire department, and Interim Fire Chief Paul Cournoyer introduced the Select Board Tuesday night to the recruitment video the department recently produced with Grafton Community Television, with fire footage contributed by photojournalist Matthew Gregoire.

Cournoyer, who took over for the retired Micky Gauthier in January, has made recruitment and training a priority during his tenure — which, he pointed out, ends in exactly 30 days. Deputy Chief Eric Mathieu, a 28-year veteran of the Grafton Fire Department, will take the role of Grafton’s first full-time fire chief in July.
