Fire destroys barn on Leland Street
A Leland Street barn burned to the ground Monday afternoon in a fire complicated by the need to bring in pumper trucks to a neighborhood that lacks fire hydrants.
“We had fire through the roof with a partial collapse of the walls in the back,” Fire Captain Mike Corda said as firefighters took axes to the charred remains of the smoking structure.

The homeowner at 47 Leland Street, who used the barn as a workshop, came home and discovered the fire just before 4 p.m. A second alarm was called, bringing in mutual aid to cover the stations and tanker trucks from Millbury, Sutton, Upton, Hopedale, and Mendon. Westborough firefighters were also at the scene.
“Obviously, it’s a total loss,” Corda said. “I really don’t have an estimate of the cost at this time.
The District 7 Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported.
