VIDEO: Grafton Police weren’t playing (with) possum in home rescue

It’s not every day that Grafton Police captures a burglar by pulling its tail.

A possum wandered into a Worcester Street home Saturday morning, most likely through a doggy door, and was confronted with the door’s usual user: the family dog. The dog, quite naturally, gave chase, eventually trapping the possum inside an open window.

Kim Schortmann spotted the critter hanging out between the window glass and screen as she walked by and, with the family not being home, contacted police.

“So, this morning Mark and I came across a possum stuck in between the screen and the window of this house,” she wrote on a video she posted to Facebook. “I rang the doorbell, no answer, but a barking dog. Called the police and this is what happened. They were able to alert the owner, who let them in and, voila!”

In the video, two Grafton officers carefully raise the screen to capture the animal, who climbed higher. Holding a barrel to catch the critter, they cautiously took the possum by its long tail and pulled it down.

The possum fell into the barrel, knocking it out of the officer’s hands, and rapidly fled into the woods, unharmed.

Actually, family was home and allowed the police entry. They didn’t hear me ringing the doorbell, so I contacted the GPD. The neighbor’s contacted the family and the rest is history!!
