MIAA hopes high school spring sports can start by May 4
The MIAA is taking an optimistic view toward spring sports, voting Monday to start the high school sports season no earlier than May 4.
The question remains: will the COVID-19 pandemic have abated enough for schools to re-open?
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, the governing body for high school sports, approved the following changes during its conference call meeting:
- The season will start no earlier than May 4 and regular season and tournament games will be completed by June 27;
- Academic eligibility will be waived, with each principal determining their own eligibility standards;
- The first team competition may not start until the seventh calendar day after the start of the spring sports season;
- For all sports, the maximum number of competitions for tournament competition is 12 and the minimum is eight.
